The government has tasked Andy Briggs, chief executive of Aviva UK and Ireland Life, to be business champion for older workers.
According to Damian Green, Work and Pensions secretary, Mr Briggs will encourage other chief executives to recruit older workers; explaining the advantages they bring to his own firm.
Speaking at the Conservative Party Conference at The ICC in Birmingham, Mr Green said: “As an economy and a society, we need the talents and experiences of older workers.
“We need to be clear about what is happening. We are not just living longer, we are able to work and earn and contribute for longer.
“These days, simply, we are younger for longer.
“This generation of over 50s can combine the wisdom of experience with the fitness of youth.”
Mr Briggs joined the board of Aviva in April 2015 as chief executive of Aviva UK Life.
He was tasked with leading Aviva’s enlarged UK life business following the acquisition of Friends Life Group Limited where he was previously group chief executive.
He has more than 25 years of operational and executive experience in the insurance industry across life assurance and general insurance, both in the UK and overseas.
He was also formerly chief executive of Scottish Widows, chief executive of the life business of Lloyds Banking Group and chief executive of the Prudential Group’s Retirement Income business.
