Aviva UK boss Briggs appointed ABI chairman

Aviva UK life chief executive Andy Briggs has been appointed as the next Association of British Insurers (ABI) chairman.

Briggs (pictured) will succeed AXA UK chief executive Paul Evans in the role. Evans will step down in October after serving his two year term.

Last April, Briggs became head of Aviva’s UK life business after it bought Friends Life, where he was chief executive.

Before taking over at Friends Life, Briggs was chief executive of financial services at Scottish Widows. He has also been chief executive of Prudential’s retirement income business and chief executive of general insurance at Lloyds Banking Group.

Earlier this year Briggs sat on the financial advice market review panel.

Briggs said he would focus on encouraging the public to save and focus on retirement.

‘I believe that as an industry our unwavering focus should be to help customers think both about savings, so that they can enjoy a secure and prosperous retirement, and also to protect their families, businesses and belongings when the unexpected happens,’ he said.

‘I look forward to working with Huw Evans, director general, and his team to ensure that that we continue the important work of this industry in overcoming the challenges we face and focusing on the role insurance plays in our society and everyday life.’
